The Healing Power of Art & Energy
The Sankofa Circle is an innovative transformative art-based workshop series featuring art-making, affirmations, reflective journaling, movement, energy work, and other creative tools for adult women who are living with, and recovering from, the after-effects of childhood sexual trauma.
Each session invites dialogue around some of the common themes of trauma, such as: trust/control, honoring the feminine, boundary-setting, body image, identify, inner awareness, self-nurturing, and personal power.
The Sankofa Circle provides information and techniques presented in an experiential format to help women feel more empowered, centered, and self-directed in their everday lives. While many participants feel that the work they do in The Sankofa Circle is therapeutic, this program is not therapy. It is a life skills training that combines transformative art-making, energy work, and group process with practical tools for addressing the longer term after-effects of sexual trauma.
The Vision:
Our goal is to provide a safe and sacred space to:
* explore creative and holistic practices for healing
* re-claim a greater sense of personal power
* increase self-awareness
* re-affirm the ability to self-nurture
* learn to fully trust and honor the Self
Participants create face masks, cloth dolls, books, body maps, clay amulets, life/story books, treasure boxes, vision collages, empowerment cards, and more. No previous art experience is required to participate.

The word Sankofa represents an Adinkra symbol called “the bird of passage”.
It means "go back and fetch it” and it reflects our intention
to help women connect with those aspects of their spirit
that may have been diminished or lost through trauma or distress.
